Since pre-Christian times, sacred wells have been an important feature of Celtic tradition. Their waters were thought to have magical properties and that drinking or bathing in these waters would confer certain gifts such as wisdom or healing. With the advent of Christianity these sites became Holy Wells, usually associated with some local saint.
Many are still beautifully cared for, while others, though dilapidated, show signs of attendance and devotion up to recent times.
My purpose in recording at these wells is to bear witness and pay tribute to those souls whose faith brought them to these sites over many years - a tradition stretching back to a time before Christianity itself. -KDM
