Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir - Surrealist photographer

Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir (1978) hails from Iceland but spent her formative years in Gainesville, Florida, USA. She is a self-taught photographer who took up photography later in life: “there is nothing I would rather do.”

Named as ‘The Web’s Top Photographer’ by The Wall Street Journal (July 2006), Rebekka is rated the most popular photographer on Flickr, an online community where 4 million users post and peruse photos. Her following began when a self-portrait with an apple suspended in mid-air appeared on the site.

Her exhibition ‘A Nordic Saga’ (a first for Ireland) comprises of surrealistic photos depicting neglected dolls, abandoned buildings and a self-portrait. Although diverse in subject, the images evoke a sense of stillness, of abandonment – they all convey tales from that remote volcanic isle in the far north: Iceland.

Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir lives in Hafnarfjörður, near Reykjavík, Iceland.
